What versions of Linux, what versions of libc or glibc, and what
versions or readline are involved here?

For what it's worth, it doesn't seem to happen to me on my ancient
Linux 1.2.8/a.out box (libc.so.4.6.27 [don't laugh]) with readline-2.2.1,
using pari 2.0.13.  I'm just rebuilding 2.0.14...  Someone remind me to
try it on my laptop at home, under a more recent kernel and library version
(and against readline 4.0) -- if and when I get home before tomorrow...
